What causes wrinkles?

In order to understand what causes wrinkles, it’s important to understand that your skin (your body’s largest organ) is made up of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is essentially the surface of your skin and this is where wrinkles become most noticeable. But what’s going on beneath the epidermis explains why those wrinkles appear in the first place. Youthful skin is rich in elastin and collagen, both of which keep the surface of your skin (the epidermis) smooth and, for a while, wrinkle-free. Aging depletes your skin’s natural stores of collagen and elastin. At the same time, fat decreases in the hypodermis, or subcutaneous layer, way beneath the surface where you can’t see what’s going on. Combine these two natural processes with moisture depletion in the epidermis and you can expect to see signs of sagging and wrinkles.

Ways to Combat the appearance of wrinkles

Give your skin a little boost by staying hydrated and avoiding harmful UV rays from sun exposure. Make sure you wear sunblock daily and add extra protection with sunglasses and a hat before spending significant time in the sun. Firstly, look for natural skincare products that are free from harmful chemicals that can contribute to a further breakdown of the natural compounds found in your skin. Also look for products that contain high levels of antioxidants to combat inflammation, a major impediment of the skin renewal process. Finally, always choose products that help your epidermis retain moisture, protecting against the dryness that causes wrinkles over time.

What is skin pigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a result of the overproduction of melanin (pigment) within the skin and can be caused by many factors, including hormonal changes, sun and pollution damage, medication, and the after-effects of acne and skin inflammation. It is a complex skin issue and also one of the most challenging conditions to treat, so patience is often required to remedy the condition.

Sven's Island remedies for 'Wrinkles and Skin Pigmentation'

Even though wrinkles and pigmentation are just another part of the aging process over which we have limited control, there are ways to keep these common facial skin problems in check for as long as possible. We recommend trying a combination approach for optimal effectiveness which includes our Spotless- facial gel cleanser and Fresh Face- ultra renewal cream which has been scientifically formulated to reduce the signs of aging.

Fresh Face- Ultra Renewal Face Cream

Fresh Face is our ‘award-winning’, 100% natural, plant-based face cream that contains high concentrations of Mamaku* fern extract. This amazing, New Zealand plant has been scientifically proven to increase new skin cell growth by a staggering 48%, hugely reducing the free radicals that contribute to collagen breakdown. The strong anti-inflammatory properties of New Zealand Kanuka honey help to reduce redness and uneven pigmentation while creating a brighter more radiant complexion.

Spotless- Facial Gel Cleanser

Our 100% natural, plant-based facial gel cleanser is packed with natural cleansing properties that eliminate dirt and oil while re-balancing the sebum in your skin without over-drying. The key ingredient is New Zealand Lemonwood leaf extract which contains high levels of antioxidants that helps the skin to repair itself and reduces inflammation which impedes the skin's renewal process. This amazing formula also contains Kumarahou leaf extract which is one of the few plants on the planet to have naturally occurring soaping properties. Many face cleansers contain synthetic soaping ingredients which can further irritate the skin and cause overdrying.

Use as directed and if symptoms persist consult your health care practitioner.
