What is baby and early childhood Eczema?

Eczema is a general term to describe a number of inflammatory skin conditions that can cause symptoms such as a red rash that makes the skin dry, itchy, and scaly. The rash can also have small bumps, which may ooze or weep fluid.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Thickened skin
  • Redness and swelling
  • Darkened skin on the eyelids and around the eyes
  • Changes to the skin around the mouth, eyes, or ears

Aside from atopic dermatitis, other types of eczema that commonly affect children include contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema (foot-and-hand eczema), and seborrheic dermatitis, or scalp eczema (also known as cradle cap in infants).

What causes baby and early childhood Eczema?

Researchers don’t know exactly what causes baby and early childhood eczema, but they believe it’s most likely due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Eczema is not contagious and Infants are more likely to develop eczema if family members have a history of eczema, hay fever, or asthma.

‘The latest scientific research is suggesting that eczema may develop from an immune-system dysfunction that affects the skin barrier and its ability to hold in moisture.

What is nappy or diaper rash?

Nappy rash or more commonly referred to as ‘Diaper rash’ is a type of skin inflammation that appears as a bright red rash on the skin covered by a nappy or diaper on the baby’s bottom. It typically occurs in infants and children below the age of 2 years old. Most babies will get a diaper rash at least once during the first 2 years of life, and it is often related to infrequently changed or wet nappies/ diapers, sensitive skin, and skin chafing. Nappy or diaper rash can be alarming for some parents and incredibly uncomfortable for the babies. However, it usually clears up with simple treatments, such as more frequent nappy/diaper changes, air drying, and the usage of ointments.

What is cradle cap?

Cradle cap is known by the medical name seborrheic dermatitis and presents itself as oily and sometimes crusty, yellow patches on an infant’s scalp. These patches can become thick, scaly, and difficult to remove and it can last for a few days to a few months. But even though the condition looks uncomfortable, parents can be comforted that the condition is temporary and can be cleared up relatively quickly.

Sven's Island remedy for 'Eczema, nappy rash and cradle cap'

Unfortunately, there is no cure for baby or early childhood eczema, but the condition usually becomes less severe over time. There are a number of different treatments available and most often, one solution may not be suitable for everyone so we recommend trying a combination approach for optimal effectiveness. Moisture loss is a major contributing factor in children's eczema so we recommend you choose moisturisers that have a high oil content over water content since this will draw more water into the skin and reduce water loss. Ointments usually have the highest oil content so they don't generally burn when they're applied to sensitive skin and are very good at sealing in moisture.
