What Causes Dry Lips?

Chapped or dry lips are generally symptoms of dehydration, sunburn, cold or dry weather, and excessive licking but it can also be caused by an allergy to something you’re eating. Acidic foods like oranges and grapefruits as purported culprits. Another condition, called angular cheilitis that happens when people breathe with their mouth at night, usually when their nose is stuffy, like during allergy or flu seasons. Generally, this is when small bits of saliva collect in this area and degrade and since saliva is a digestive enzyme it can dissolve the tissue creating dryness and inflammation.

Ingredients To 'Look For' In Your Lip Balm

  • Natural flavours
  • Natural oils - Coconut oil, Safflower oil, Olive oil, Avocado oil, Hemp oil, Jojoba oil, and Vitamin E oil
  • Natural butters - Shea Butter, Cocoa butter, Avocado butter, Hemp butter, and Mango Butter
  • Natural waxes- Beeswax, Candelilla wax, Jojoba wax, and Carnauba wax

These ingredients have a naturally occurring high oil content over water content and will draw more water into the lips and reduce water loss. End result, more moisture, and hydration.

Ingredients To 'Avoid' In Your Lip Balm

  • Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly)
  • Paraffin or Synthetic Mineral oils
  • Parabens
  • Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
  • Phenol and Alcohol
  • Artificial Fragrance And Flavours
  • Chemical Sunscreen

These ingredients are ones that will further strip moisture from your lips and may contain damaging properties that increase dryness, redness, and inflammation.
